All Men Are Evil (Except My Girlfriend) is a weekly night at The Stud that is all about riot girl and queer punk. And the tunes served up by the DJs at All Men are Evil last Thursday did not disappoint. DJs Mama Crass and Alex Cox spun a playful, refreshing mix of songs that had my friends and I dancing nearly the entire time. It was unpredictable and 10 shades of fun.

All Men are Evil also features live bands every week, and I’m pretty sure the band playing that night is a secret to many people…but they won’t be for long.

I don’t even know where to start. First of all their name, It’s a Secret to Everybody, is a reference to an old school Nintendo game. And the Nintendo love fest doesn’t end there…oh no. The 8 bit influence can be readly felt in the songs as they play homage to specific games and even sample music from the games themselves. I personally couldn’t wait to see what Marty had in store visually for the show, since I’d seen him setting up a projector.

The crowd that night at The Stud was anything but energetic when It’s a Secret to Everybody took the stage. But as soon as they started playing their crazy and amazing electronic Nintendo dance music, the crowd instantly started moving. Clips of old school Nintendo games moved across the screen behind the It’s a Secret trio (Marty, Abby and Aiju), eliciting oooooh’s and aaaahh’s from the crowd. We were knee-deep in nostalgia and loving it.

Honestly, I was blown away by how good It’s a Secret to Everybody was live. I don’t know how they do it (because it’s a secret) but they perfectly orchestrate a combination of sounds from synthesizers, guitar, electronic drums, sweet lullaby vocals, vintage organ, and a heavy dash of Nintendo, and create pure musical brilliance.

I danced my ass off, as did most of the crowd. And I can’t wait to do it again. Just don’t mention Sega Genesis during the show…it might cause a brawl.

It’s a Secret is one of the most interesting, creative, talented and fun bands I’ve seen. Spread the word and it won’t be a secret for long.
