HAROLD RAY LIVE IN CONCERT
Uptown (Oakland)
03/30/07
It’s difficult not to work your body when listening to the down and dirty soul of Harold Ray Live in Concert. Attempts to do so can only successfully be achieved by lifeless corpses. You will dance, you will sweat, you will be entertained. That was the lesson I was unprepared to learn at their show at Oakland’s Uptown.
Unlike other bands that try to emulate the sounds of decades past; Harold Ray Live in Concert can make you believe that you have just traveled back in time. They perform covers of 60’s soul songs that you probably haven’t ever even heard with just a tiny hint of a Blues Brothers-type gimmickiness. On stage, the band emits so much sweat they stain the pits and collars of their white button-up shirts. The wailing saxophone compliments the lead singer’s howl and pushes the funky beat coming out of the bass just a bit further.
They are not fazed by the barrage of audience request and heckles. They shrug off barely-missed projectiles thrown onstage like old pros who just want a free beer at the end of the evening. The energy and stage presence of Harold Ray Live in Concert is infectious and borders on chaotic. All you can do is try and catch your breath between songs.
