Top Critters, Sleeptalks @ Thee Parkside 02/19/10
- Author: Mike G
- Published: Saturday, February 20, 2010
Scatterbrain Jamboree 2010 is underway, folks! It kicked off last night with the Top Critters as the headliners. These guys played last year, which was my first time seeing them play live, and I really dug it. This year they were just as good. They're a six-piece, and the way they blend all the various elements — including, occasionally and most awesomely, a bowed banjo — into a seamless, all-instrumental whole is impressive. See for yourself:

Judgement Day Release Violin Hero Music Video for "Cobra Strike"
- Author: Katherine Hoffert
- Published: Monday, February 01, 2010
"There's too much violins in videogames." -Obama, via "Cobra Strike" (sorta)
Today, local string-metal maestros Judgement Day premiered the music video for "Cobra Strike," the first single off their forthcoming album, Peacocks/Pink Monsters, due out April 13. Based on the concept of "Violin Hero" and its responsibility for the fall of society, this highly ambitious video was seven months in the making (read all about it here), and it shows. Like the song, the video is a face-melting shredder of compositional complexity, inventiveness and hyperactivity. In addition to inspired production from Zzalgern0n and clever details like "Prepare 4 Judgement Day" amidst the violin mania, look for cameos from Paul Rust (I Love You, Beth Cooper), Matt Braunger, Josh Fadem (30 Rock), Josh Perry ("Retarded Policeman"), BJ Averell (winner of The Amazing Race), Matt Cornell (Extreme Elvis)—and a Snuggie! ...

Grayceon @ Thee Parkside 01/23/10
- Published: Sunday, January 31, 2010
Last Saturday was my first Grayceon show in almost three years. Last time I saw them they’d only put out their debut, self-titled album. Now they have a second album out (plus a split seven inch with Giant Squid, cellist/vocalist Jackie Perez Gratz's other band), and plan to release a third this year.

Album Review: MakeMe, House of Brakes
- Author: Katherine Hoffert
- Published: Tuesday, January 12, 2010
MakeMe’s latest album, House of Brakes, deals in the futile art of trying to stop the unstoppable. Musically, however, it’s all about tension and release. Full of bracing melodies, jarring guitars, lush textures, frenzied beats and a sweet/punky playfulness, House of Brakes is as energizing as a cold shower and as satisfying as a hot bath. ...
